Looking

Feeling very overwhelmed! I no longer am looking for my dream grade or school, I am just looking ANYWHERE for a job. Any tips or suggestions are accepted! :)

  1. Don't give up. Usually districts (at least out here) wait until the last minute to make decisions, when they know final student numbers. Let me repeat - don't give up. Be flexible for a grade, unless you have a lot of options, then choose the one you really want. My first year I just needed to get in the door - so I took a job as a science prep teacher on an emergency credential (I have my gen. ed). The second year they still weren't hiring gen. ed. teachers, so my principal asked me to do a K/1 spec. ed, so I did that on an emergency credential too. I bounced around to different grade levels for the first 5 years of teaching. It worked out great, and it added a lot to my resume. It'll all work out.

  2. Hi Jenna -

I have found that collaborating is the best way to get a job. I am heading into my student teaching with several job offers. I just hope they will be available when I am ready. Stop by my blog as I am doing a series right now on tips for student teachers. It will work for new teachers as well. I will add in a question on tips for job hunting for you.

  3. Keep at it! We haven't even posted our openings yet (they post in August). Something will come up...it might not be your dream job but you'll get in the door.

  4. I am with the ladies above. I have been at my school for 8 years this fall but I VIVIDLY remember the feeling of "please SOMEBODY hire me". For a year after I graduated I subbed in area schools. Then I took a position at the school I am at now as a parapro in Title 1. That got my foot in the door and REALLY has helped me as a classroom teacher. Keep at it!

  5. I thought I responded, but I don't think it went through. I live about 45 minutes NE of Knoxville? What brings you to TN? Have you applied in TN yet? I'm glad we have connected. I love finding TN bloggers!!

  6. I'm in the same boat. I am nervously waiting for the phone to ring every day. In the meantime, I'm looking for other opportunities in education - at local colleges, private schools, etc.
